About Me

Hi there, I'm Leigh, crafty creator of Felt 'N' Funky. I've always had an interest in all things artsy & crafty from a young age and originally studied pottery & ceramics (to then unfortunately find I had an allergy to clay!). So instead, I went on to achieve an honours degree in Graphic Design. I worked as a graphic designer for a few years in Edinburgh, before embarking on a year of travelling around Australia. It was during my travels that I decided to pursue my other true love - animals. I returned from Oz to study an honours degree in Zoology and I've recently graduated with an MSc in Applied Animal Behaviour & Welfare.

However, despite the career change I still love to create things. I'm a rather tactile person and love to make things, illustrate and draw when I can. While I was in between jobs a couple of years ago, I stumbled across felting and thought 'Oh, I wanna try that'! Felting is an ancient craft and its amazing what you can make from it, it's a really flexible medium to work with.
I have experimented with wet and needle felting techniques and primarily create things using needle felting. My creations are unique, funky, colourful and quite often psychidelic! I make lots of felty things such as mobile phone cosy's; Kindle Kosys; brooches; jewellery; bags; purses, 3D designs and more. Each item is individually crafted, so no two are the same.

Needle felted creations can take time to produce, as many of  my designs are intricate. To needle felt, roving wool is layed on in strands ontop of pre-felt, then I use either 1, 3 or 5 needles at a time and needle the wool onto the pre-felt to create a design. I do not use appliques or a machine, each design is created freehand.
Many of my creations are quite organic and free-flowing, with no particular design, I just go where the felt takes me!
